Using the Internet in Teaching Foreign
Languages
Linda Thalman
This is the outline of my talk given in Compiegne. Many thanks to the organizers
of the conference and the participants.
Introduction
Premise: Internet technology should be and will be part of the
classroom
Premise: Good pedagogy must be used with the Internet
Premise: Equipment, bandwidth, and training of the teachers will
be the major hurdles
"Technology will not replace teachers... teachers who use technology will probably
replace teachers who do not." as Ray Clifford of the Defense Langue Institute put it,
and as cited in
"The Internet in the Classroom: A Valuable
Tool and Resource for ESL/EFL Teachers, by Christine Meloni.
Steps to Integrating and Using Internet

skills

email forums
- Exploring the Web
- Developing materials and projects to use with the Internet
- Collaborating with colleagues locally, regionally and/or internationally
- Training students for computer literacy
- Implementing projects using the Internet
